Automating your feedings with your AFS is a great, hassle-free solution to feeding your aquarium on a regular basis.  There are many variables that go into automating a feeding.  You likely want your return pump, skimmer and power heads to turn off before the feeding begins and remain off for a period of time after the feeding.  We have worked up this guide to help you create this on your own.  While our specific example here might not be to your specific needs, it should answer most of the questions or get your started to creating your own feeding routine.

  1. First, we need to illustrate the example of our feeding routine.
    1. We want to feed at 12:00 pm, 6:00 pm and have the ability to feed "on demand" with activating Feed A.   In total the feeding routine will be 5 minutes
    2. We only want the AFS to do one rotation.
    3. We want our return pump and power heads to be off one minute before the AFS operates, while it operates, and 3 minutes after it operates.
    4. We want our skimmer to turn off when our return pump turns off and 14 minutes after the AFS operates (let's not skimm out all that good food!)

  2. Second, we need to create a "virtual outlet" for our feeding routine.  This allows us to be able to control all of our different outlets fairly easily.
    1. Create a virtual outlet using your display screen:  Setup > Outlet Setup> Add Outlet
    2. Within a minute or two you should see a new outlet configurable in your outlet list.
    3. It will be labeled as a "virtual" outlet type

  3. Next, let's configure that new outlet to the specific to our needs identified in 1.1.
    1. Name the outlet- vFeed
    2. Control Type- Advanced
    3. Program:

      Set Off
If Time 12:00 to 12:04 Then ON
If Time 18:00 to 18:04 Then On
      If FeedA 000 Then On

    4. Update to your Apex

  4. Now, let's configure your return pump/power heads to turn off according to our new vFeed outlet that we detailed in 1.3
    1. Select your Return pump outlet
    2. Control Type-Advanced
    3. Program:

      Fallback On
      Set On
If Outlet vFeed = On Then Off

    4. Update to your Apex
    5. Repeat the exact same steps for your power heads (optional)

  5. Next, let's configure your Skimmer to turn off as we detailed in 1.4
    1. Select your Skimmer pump outlet
    2. Control Type-Advanced
    3. Program:

      Fallback Off
      Set On
If Outlet vFeed = On Then Off
      Defer 10:00 Then ON

    4. Update to your Apex
    5. Please Note: Any time you turn your skimmer off it will now remain off for at least 10 minutes.  If you want more or less time for the skimmer to remain off simply adjust the Defer time in the program above.

  6. Finally, lets configure your AFS to operate as described in step 1.1
    1. Select your AFS outlet
    2. Control Type- Advanced
    3. Program:

      Set Off
If Outlet vFeed = On Then On
      Defer 1:00 Then ON

    4. Update to your Apex
    5. Please Note: If you want to delay the feeder operation more or less time then adjust the "Defer 1:00" statement appropriately.  For example, 30 seconds would be "Defer 0:30 Then On."

Now, test your feeding routine out!  All of your outlets need to be set to Auto.  Select FeedA and watch it happen.  Should you want different, more, or less times than as described in the above example, then simply adjust the "vFeed" outlet appropriately.
